Over the last few years I’ve developed an unhealthy obsession with board games. I’m not just talking about your average family board games either. Oh no. I’m talking about geeky, strategic, competitive, tactical stuff of the highest order. I’m not really sure how it all began but I suspect it has something to do with some of our close friends who eased us from the softer stuff of Trivial Pursuits towards the award winning “Gateway Games” such as Settlers of Catan and more….
All of this obsession has culminated in a quest! And our quest is this: play all of the Spiel des Jahres (“Game of the Year”) winning board games. We had already played a few of them (Settlers of Catan, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and a couple of others) before we started the official quest but this idea started when we were on holiday in Devon this Summer. The plan is to play all the games since the Spiel des Jahres started in 1978.
We played our first game of the quest a few weeks ago – Enchanted Forest (aka Sagaland), the 1982 winner.
There was some debate about whether Mr and Mrs.P had possibly cheated as they had pre-played the game and had advance knowledge of possible tactics but it was useful for someone to know what was going on. Mr.P was the winner and this has been recorded on our spreadsheet (yes, of course we have a spreadsheet!). At the time of play we didn’t have a scoring system developed but we do now so here’s how it did:
The next game on the list is Focus. If anyone has any tactical tips which could help me take the in, please let me know!!
